Hi, I’m Chloe Deschamps
A freelance writer based in Calgary, Alberta. I specialise in arts & culture, and I write essays, articles, film reviews, blog posts, and listicles. I am an English major at the University of Calgary, with ample experience and a passion for writing. I can bring creativity and a fresh perspective to any business, blog, website or social media page.
In my free time, I love to read books; I’m a huge fan of Ancient Greek literature, Shakespeare, and gothics but I also enjoy more contemporary fiction. and even the occasional Y/A book. My favourite topic to write about in academia is Shakespeare and the wider cultural implications of his works, including modern renditions on stage, films inspired by his works, and modern retellings of his plays. I also have an interest in the modern cultural implications of Greek literature and how the epics have affected even the most modern forms of storytelling. Essentially, I love to write about how older texts are still affecting writers, filmmakers, and other storytellers today. I believe in making classic literature more accessible to the masses and to bring joy back to these works that the average person often doesn’t find.
As a movie fan, my taste varies wildly and I love writing reviews (especially if they’re positive reviews!) I’m inspired by directors like Wong-Kar Wai, Hayao Miyazaki, Ingmar Bergman, Gus Van Sant, Bong Joon-ho, Sofia Coppola, Taika Waititi, David Lynch and many many more. I believe that great film exists on the cross section of entertainment, art, and sincerity. I don’t think pretentiousness has any place in the study of film, and that great film exists in the low budgets, in children’s film, and in and chick-flicks.
